Marvels Avengers not the British version… A review: Spoilers, read later if you want
Okay Spoilers Alert!!!! You can turn back if you want. No. I mean turn back if you don’t to hear plot details and be totally bored by a comic book nerd…
Okay, don’t say you haven’t been warned…
First off, I am a comic book nerd about certain comic book characters and I know going to see a movie that for the most part that it’s some one else’s vision. I get that and for the most part, I’ve been pleased with the movie versions. For the most part. I’ve read Marvels Avengers for nigh on 30 years (That’s the title on the movie as not to be confused with The Avengers from across the pond and not that God awful movie version). And I read a version of Marvels Avengers called The Ultimates, which is a darker version of said comic book. Which has elements of both books that only a comic book nerd would catch. My favorite comic boo characters are no real order are Batman, Spider-Man, Iron Man, and The Fantastic Four. I’ll do another blog why I like these later.
One other thing before seeing Marvels Avengers is you may want to see Thor and Captain America First Avenger first. Reason being that there are certain plot elements that are carried from those two movies to this movie. They explain as they go along but it would be helpful.
Okay, some place in the middle of no where, a goverment facility is attacked by Loki and takes some people with him and a device that allows you to go anywhere in the Universe. Nick Fury then calls in his people. One by one join him on The Helecarrier (Think Naval Aircraft Carrier that flies) try and locate Loki and his device. He made a deal with some aliens to give them his device for a price. A fight ensues between Captain America, Thor and Iron Man. The Loki starts to screw with everyone, escapes (This is bare bones, I know. Sue me…) and activates device and the alien invasion begins. Mass destruction, epic fight scenes, and tons of CGI… The Good guys win. The End.
Okay, if you have no clue to who the characters are and the back story, this movie ain’t for you. But if you have an idea what’s going on, give it a shot. The Back Widow (Scarlett Johansson) is, for some reason, has a good deal of screen time here. This being Joss Whedeon, he has strong female characters. And from what I was reading before, the story was going to be told from Captain America aka Steve Rodgers point of view. Which I am glad he went this way. Why I ain’t going to tell ya. (See the movie if you want to find out)
For the most part I liked the movie. There was a lot more humor than I was expecting. All the main and bit characters were well represented. Spoiler alert: Agent Coulsen dies. The guy who has had a part in every recent Marvel movie recently. And his death galvanizes the team in to action. There is a small plot of redemption that runs through the movie. Even Pepper Potts has decent small part. Mark Ruffalo takes the reins of Bruce Banner before they use CGI Hulk. Jeremy Renner as Hawkeye is good. Cobie Smulders is solid and Samuel L. Jackson is solid. But as much as I like Joss Whedon as a director (He did give us Serenity) and he did have a part in the writing, I can’t give this movie higher than a B. And I don’t think it has the legs like The Hunger Games. Yeah, two different styles of movie but I want to see The Hunger Games again and Marvels Avengers…Not so much… The guy who plays Loki is awesome as playing a bad guy. Why is it that the best bad guys are played by some British person? I may now want to see Thor and maybe see Captain America.
Overall, unless you’ve watched the previous movies, I’d pass on this. And it pains me to say this. But if you’ve seen the previous movies and want to see Joss doing what he does best, spend the cash and you won’t be disappointed. Parts of the movie were filmed in Cleveland Ohio and I caught a few places but I was more interested in the story and for the most part, it was decent. A lot decent actors had bit parts and I was more excited by that. I was kinda hoping for some other actors from previous Joss’s shows for even a cameo.Ah well. The comic book nerd was satisfied with it and I knew going in this wasn’t going to be nothing but what it was. A popcorn action movie. Will I buy this on DVD/Blue Ray? Maybe. The previews went on way too long before the movie and it wasn’t nothing I haven’t seen on-line. I still want to see The Dark Knight Rises even more.
Lord, it’s after 5:00am and I need to get a few hours of sleep. But I had to get this down before I crash before I started to really think about it and maybe give it a different review. I’ll blog later about my week.
And I hear the faint sounds of cricketts chirping in the back ground…

first, i had to laugh about your explaining the avengers thing. because. yea.
even though it’s whedon, ain’t no way. but i’m glad you enjoyed it.
hmm. i’m thinking. it’s possible that the only comic to movie i’ve seen is the spiderman where whatsherface screams through the whole thing. guess i saw ironman too, but that was by accident. haven’t even seen dark knight, which i hear is brilliant. but really. i don’t see a lot of movies anyhow.
later.
Saw the movie last week. Enjoyed it very much. Glad I didn’t read this first. LOL… Wish I could recommend, but your site will not allow me to do so. :O(
Thank you for the rec on my current post. Appreciated.
If you liked it, great. I have said I am a comic book nerd. It is what it is. And am hoping the sequal is better. I will be buying it on Blue Ray/DVD. Waiting for The Dark Knight Rises. It may not make as much but I’m looking for how the story will end.
