  • Odds and Ends…

After a sunny day, Thunder is rumbling through north eastern Ohio. Am still waiting for the late month snowstorm Ohio is soooo known for. As it stands, it’s going to rain next Friday. That happens to be my 46th year on the face of this place we call Earth.

I am SO seeing the mid-night showing of The Hunger Games because I took the Thursday night off. It’s a safe bet it’s going to be the first blockbuster of the year. Tomorrow I’m going to pick up the other two books and read them next Thursday before I go to see the movie.

In stead of watching the first round of March Madness like I used to, I went back to this coffee shop I used to go to a lot back in the day. It used to be open 24/7 but due to the economy, they cut back their hours. But a very nice alternative to the corporate versions of other coffee bars. And it’s been in the area for almost 20 years. Back in the day before Ohio banned smoking, there was a nice haze of smoke and smell of strong coffee. I’ve kicked that habit a few years ago but there was I time I spent my weekends at the place. I’m glad it’s still there and still kicking. There’s a Starbucks and another local chain coffee shop but I usually get my coffee fix at Speedway. It’s on my way and it’s better coffee. I just like going to Common Grounds because I could chill out, read a book, screw around on the Internet and not have to deal with a bunch of idiots. Back in the day, they used to have pinball machines. Yeah, it’s safe to say I blew a decent amount of cash there.

My cousins in West Virgina are bummed because The Mountaineirs got spanked by Gonzaga. Meanwhile, Ohio State is heading to The Sweet 16 next weekend. I didn’t do any brackets this year. I usually get skunked in the first round. I don’t think Ohio State will advance past The Sweet 16 but hope springs eternal. And now that I have totally bored the female audience with college basketball, we’ll resume our normal programing…

Re watched Enemy Mine today. Cheesy Sci-Fi but a decent story. Another Sci-Fi movie that has a special place in my heart is Battle Beyond The Stars. Pure Cheese but good cheese.

Couldn’t sleep last night so on Scfi I was watching Mars Rising. A series of shows narrated by William Shatner about a future mission to Mars and what it would take to get there. It’s on youtube somewhere but it was an interesting show. Stephen Baxter wrote one the best stories about a mission to Mars called Voyage and to get to Mars we are using Apollo tech and there is no Space Shuttle. A really good read. Ben Bova has written three good books about Mars. I’m rereading Space by James Michener. Good book. Bad mini series. How can you squeeze a 12 hour mini series out of a book that runs close to 1,000 pages? Dumb question because you can’t. The Stand came close but I like the book, both versions, better.

In case you haven’t heard, Fox has cancelled another Sci-Fi show. Yeah, Terra Nova got cut. If it wasn’t for Bones, Fringe, and The Finder (I’d be surprised if it made it to season two. They screwed up The Human Target and we know what happened to that show. And don’t get me started on Firefly or Space: Above And Beyond…) I wouldn’t be watching anything they put on their network. ABC did the same thing a few summers back with Defying Gravity. Again with the exploring fetish I have but I guess I was one of the few that watched it and they cancelled it before airing the episodes they shot. It’s getting to the point where I may just stop watching network TV and just watch either Netflix or read books…

Going to call it a night and watch it rain and enjoy the cool down…

    Be carefull out there…

  • Random thoughts…

As I was looking through my DVD collection, 300 or so and a few Blue-Rays, I found one that I haven’t seen in four years. Free Enterprise is a movie I saw when hit the small theaters way back in 1996. Here’s the plot: Two guys who worshiped Captain Kirk from way back meet up with William Shatner and find out he’s a douche bag and the dreaded big 3-0 is happening to one of the guys and the other may have found the love of his life but he has issues of his own. For the Sci-Fi geek, there is every sci-fi reference know to man/woman kind. And it’s funny as all get out. This is the movie where we find out that Shatner can be funny. A pre Will and Grace Will McCormack is one of the leads. There’s a bit sex in it but not too graphic. The audio commentary between the director, writer, and two leads are very funny. Contrast it with Mr. Shatners’ commentary which was dead serious. The credits were just as funny. Dunno if it’s on Netflix but I’m sure it’s on Amazon.

For some reason, there’s been a lot of talk/shows about the of the world/society. Shows about the end of the world, shows about people who prep for doomsday, etc… Me I have a small bag that has a few things that will come in handy if things hit the fan: A small bottle of bleach that has a lot of uses, two changes of clothes, three trash bags, three changes of under wear, some weather proof matches, a small but complete first aid kit and some can foods and snacks. I did this after watching a show called Dual Survival. It’s about two guys who have different ways of survival. It’s fun to watch and I had some spare cash (Most of what I got was from Dollar Tree and used re-sale places) and thought it might be handy to have around. So to Boulderchristina, I’m semi prepared for the zombie hordes, just need a automatic shotgun and shotgun shells…

Dad is going in sometime for di fib on his heart sometime soon. Am hoping it’s after birthday in nine days because he hasn’t gotten word back from the doctor who’s going to it. He and I are “planning” celebrating birthdays together seeing my birthday is March 23 by going bowling. I’ve tride to get some of my cousins to maybe come celebrate at least his birthday. I posted it on Facebook a while back with no one replying. So things are up in the air until then. Lucky for me my birthday falls on a Friday but I’m taking a vacation day the Thursday before so I can have a four day weekend.

Gotta love Mother Nature and Old Man Winter for having it snow on the weekend. I’m waiting for the big snow storm to dump it’s load on us. It’s happened before. So until July 4th happens, I expect snow up to then.

No vacations this year. Just a series of four day weekends. Maybe a trip to West Virgina for my uncles’ birthday but until then, I’ll take my four day weekends. Less stressful and more relaxing that way…

There’s comercial that has a song from the 1990′s that has different versions of it and it was on the soundtrack of Grosse Pointe Blank. Any help would be nice…

Man I hate Mondays and at work I expect Doomsday or the worse at work… Everything bad has happened on Mondays at work. So crossing my fingers that Monday won’t be too bad…

So unless the Walking Dead start up: Be Carefull Out There…

  • Odds and Ends…

New show I’m watching is Sons Of Guns on Discovery. I like guns. I don’t own one but I like guns. Anyways it’s a show about a company called Red Jacket out side of New Orleans that makes and sells guns. It’s a fun show and the owners daughter is a hottie. Yeah girls with guns are hot, sue me. So along with the shows I watch I’m adding another one.

A bit shocked with the season finale of White Collar. Did NOT see that coming…

Playing hooky from work and it’s nice to payed to do it and it’s a nice day to do it…

Seriously thinking of buying the PS Vita after seeing how it sold over a million units last week. I’m waiting on more feed back before I do but right now it’s looking like a birthday gift to myself right now.

The shooting in Chardon is a tragedy and I wish the freaking media would leave the city alone until the whole story is out. Some much speculation as to what happened and it’s all that’s on the local new stations. Three dead now.

After seeing another trailer for The Avengers (Marvel Super Heroes, not the English Spy series), I may try and go to a midnight showing. I need to watch first Thor and Captain America First Avenger. The last Marvel Super Hero movie I saw was Iron Man II and was not amused. I liked the first one and the second suffered from too many villains and too many sub plots. So if anyone has seen Thor and Captain America, I’d like to know if I’m wasting my time and just wait for The Dark Knight Rises… Or I may see Hunger Games before reading the series. No, I haven’t seen the Harry Potter movies. I read the series and from my experience with reading books that are developed into movies are not that good. One that was good was The Shawshank Redemption and none other come to mind unless someone has one they recommend.

Speaking of books, William W. Johnstone wrote some really good Westerns and he did a decent action/adventure series called The Ashes. For a different take on Westerns, give Deadwood a look. But my favorite Western Movie is Tombstone. Hands down an awesome movie. Silverado a close second. Both I have on DVD with all the extras. Most of my DVDs have tons of extras. If you’re going to buy a DVD, why not get everything else. I have’t bought any of The Lord Of The Rings movies until they finish putting out another set every few years. It’s as a bad as George Lucas putting another “remake” on the Star Wars trilogy…

Well here’s to hoping there isn’t a huge snow storm in March and really grateful I don’t live where there area where tornadoes hit. After watching how Branson MO got hit this morning… Well I hope no one lived in the area where the severe weather hit. On that subject, read The Coming Global Super Storm by Whitely Strieber. It’s something to keep you aware of the times we live in…

Let’s try and be safe out there…

Favorite Lines From Movies: “I Aim To Misbehave” Serenity “I Came To Kick Ass And Chew Bubble Gum And I’m All Out Of Bubble Gum.” They Live.

Favorite Line From A Song: “Life Around Here Don’t Make A Damn Bit Of Sense” Bruce Hornsby And The Range “Another Day”

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PTD6773wA58&feature=player_detailpage#t=0s It’s amazing these guys still have the harmonies in the vocals…

The above song is another one of those songs that when I listen to get me out of what ever funk I happen to be in…http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xzVHb7W97JY&feature=player_detailpage#t=4s

Buy three new snow shovels and only used one twice this year. Just glad I didn’t get the snow blower I was planning on buying…

Like The Finder which means that A. It’s on Fox B. It won’t last one season.

I’m closing on the Bid 5-0 and I could care less. I mean why have birthdays after age 21? 16 you get to drive a car, 18 means you can vote and 21 means you can drink legally. Then what’s to look forward to?

Two non legal thillers from John Grisham to read: Playing For Pizza and Bleachers. Football themed but worth a read. Speaking of Mr. Grisham: Why can’t his books be made into decent movies outside of A Time To Kill?

Recently watched a documentary on Rush and remembered why they’re one of my favorite bands why “Subdivisions” still stands the test of time.

One of these days I’m going to read “The Dark Tower” series and maybe read the latest Stephen King book but I stopped reading his books when I didn’t like “Misery”. “The Stand” still stands to me as his best book. Well, his additions he did with it and gladly parted cash in hard cover when it came out.

Will be happy when the political ads are over with. More trash talking in those ads than in “Pro Wrestling”. At least that’s entertaining.

Time to call it a night…

Hope everyone has a quiet weekend…

I got the sentences screwed up in the videos. But they are great songs. The harmonies bit is for “It’s a long way there” from the video of Birtles Shorock and Gobel and song for getting out a funk is “Best Man I Can” from Queensryche.

  • Odds and Ends…

    A mixed week…

Alone again on Valentines Day… Grrr. That and Sweetest Day is not a day I like when I’m not at least seeing someone. To make matters worse  I dropped my PSP into a puddle of water that was five inches deep. PSPs have this tendency to open up, where you put in the UMD module, when you drop them. Sis tried to tell me it could be saved but it was not to be. Frack me. Out another $130.00. I did get a chance to play with the new PlayStation Vita and I sooooooo want one. Not the 3G version because it needs a data plan and if I want that I may as well get a Android phone. But when I played the demo for Hot Shots Golf I was hooked and was seriously thinking of buying it but I can wait until the price comes down a bit or treat myself on my birthday next month.

I recovered from my cold. But for right now, I’m still taking Vitamin C just to keep it away with this “Winter” thing going on. Where’s the snow? Knowing my luck the month of March is the month when Old Man Winter decides to get caught up and dump snow on us. I’m hoping that the Summer Months ain’t going to be a scorcher because the warehouse where I work at has no air circulation what so ever. I can’t tell you the time I’ve had a summer cold due to walking in and out of a walk in cooler.

I missed out on scoring any candy from Valentines Day. I remember when I went into a Walmart Halloween night at 1 am and I kid you not one lady had three carts filled up when the candy was marked down 50%.

I’m hoping that the rain holds off this weekend so I can get two days of hour long walks in or I may start hitting the eliptical machine at some point. I’m not getting huge but the winter months in Ohio are hard to get outside and at least walk.

I found out that Matt Bomer from White Collar was gay. Not that I care because I still like the show. And will still watch it.

I guess my favortie show from the 1970′s Space: 1999 is in the stages for a remake. I’m not sure how I feel about it because there’s another attempt it and I think it looks better. And the guy who is charge of it gave us the V series remake and we know how that ended. There’s a fan site on Facebook that really good called Space: 2099. With all the remakes, this show, Space: 1999,should have had one mad sooner.

Logged off my computer and found out that I have Windows 9/Explorer 9 and now have to go through finding all my favorites and re-saving them. I hated Firefox and now I have this as I am computer unsavy. Grrrr…

Speaking of TV Shows: I read some where NBC is ordering a show that has Hannibal Lector in the show. A pretty good guess that Anthony Hopkins ain’t going to be in it. No offense this ain’t going to work. And I think that Manhunter, the movie they based on Red Dragon that Michael Mann directed and a young William Peterson as the lead. I loved the books Robin Harris wrote and the last third of Hannibal was just wrong with what he did to Ms. Starling. Not the movie version but the story was good but the author made sure you know that Mr. Lector is a major league bad guy and not someone you can sympathize with.

Well just finished doing the laundry and it’s time to decide on something to read before calling it a night.

Hope everyone is well and happy. Anything more is extra. But hitting the Power Ball would make things nicer…

  • Happy Valentines Day…

To those ladies Happy Valentines Day and tomorow 50% off the candy for us poor folk who depleated their Christmas Candy stash already. Sadly there isn’t a significant other in my life at this point and I have to work my night shift anyway. Snowing again and it’s time to head into work shorthanded again. Feeling the need to make some chilli this weekend and maybe some cornbread.

  • Odds and Ends…

Well, the dryer fix ended up costing me $150.00. $50 for the call and $100 parts and labor all for a heating switch. And he fixed the door that wasn’t closing all the way. And it’s drying the clothes faster. So it was money well spent. Another $150 for sisters birthday dinner. With the tip, two balloons, a pine apple up-side down cake and a birthday card and a good part of my pay check is gone. Red Lobster of all places…

Had a decent work-out thanks to Mother Nature. Nice it was cold before the snow started. Five inches of light fluffy snow.Because the wet and heavy stuff is a freaking pain to deal with. Just hoping it sticks around and stays cold because this up and down temps have given me a nasty cold. Last weekend it kicked in to full gear. Nothing like having to use nose spray just to get a few hours of sleep.

A few posts back I mentioned favorite comic strips. I was having a brain fart and forgot mentioned two of my other favorites are Calvin and Hobbes and Foxtrot. Calvin and Hobbes was the best hands down. Speaking about the absurdities in life. He’s lives in North Eastern Ohio and is soooo missed. At least he went out on his terms. Slowly but surely I’m picking up his compilations when the library has them their quarterly sales. Foxtrot was another one that spoke to me. He only does Sunday strips now and the paper I read doesn’t carry it. I liked all the characters and the way the writer skewered popular culture. And having a blind character early on was awesome. I met the creator at a book signing way out on the eastern Ohio at this funky little bookstore that I dropped some decent cash when I found some out of print books.

So is anyone heading out to see Star Wars Episode I in 3D? Or has this all played out for George Lucas? Lord, has this nut job squeezed enough cash out of this tired franchise. I stopped giving that guy any more of my cash when he decided to “fix” the original Star Wars and have, nerd alert nerd alert, Greedo shot first. Yeah, nerd alert but the reason Han Solo was a good character because he evolved from a simple tramp pilot to a decent guy. I got tricked into seeing The Phantom Menace and I haven’t seen anything of his since. I get that it’s his to do what he want to and maybe “fix” flaws but enough all ready.

I didn’t watch the Super Bowl. I did see the new “Avengers” trailer and I won’t be seeing the movie. The only movie I want to see is The Dark Knight Rises and maybe The Hobbit. I liked Joss Whedons’ Firefly and Serenity but I have a bad feeling with The Avengers.

I will be glad when the political ads will be done in November. Just think if all the money spent on these ads were to be spent on something useful like, I don’t know how about putting some of it towards public education. I mean close to a Billion, that’s right a Billion dollars will be spent on ads this year.

The 200th episode of NCIS was freaking awesome!!!!! Man this show just never gets dull…
